Alan Roach
“I’ve announced Vladimir Putin 5 or 6 times”
Part of the gameday experience is the sights, sounds, and smells. The beer guy calling out, the smell of popcorn, and being mixed in with the crowd waiting for the game to start. A critical part of a live sports experience though is the PA announcer. Something about the announcement of the starting line ups or the ‘now batting’ call just completes the experience. Alan Roach started his career in radio and sort of backed his way into PA announcing in baseball. A chance trip to a AAA ballpark opened a door to the PA booth. With zero experience, Roach walked through that door and never came back out.
“There was so much excitement in my voice”
Alan Roach’s career has been as interesting as it has been busy. Since leaving central Iowa radio for Colorado, Roach has taken the microphone for the Colorado Rockies, University of Colorado, University of Denver, Denver Broncos, and Colorado Avalanche in addition to his morning drive radio show. Roach was starting his days at 4 am to get people to work and then closing down the ballpark, stadium, or arena for years on end. That chance opportunity for the Colorado Springs SkySox AAA team turned into a new career. Roach’s voice is now one of the most sought-after in professional sports. He is currently the PA voice for the Minnesota Vikings and the Super Bowl in addition to his work in the Olympics, World Cup and countless other events.
“You said Mark McGwire... Whoops”
Roach’s experiences have taken him around the world and to some of the greatest events in sports. His bucket list includes announcing an awards show because he has pretty much done everything else. This coming summer Alan Roach will reach peak Moonlighter status as the voice of the MLB game at the Field of Dreams.

Role players come in all shapes and sizes. And sometimes, they have to change their shapes and sizes to fit their roles. So as you fill up on Christmas goodies and homecooked meals, just pretend you are getting yourself ready for a new challenge. Ryan Harklau went from being a 3 sport star at Humboldt High School to working through the dark days of the Dan McCarney era. Harklau has never stopped chasing down experiences in and around sports. Today he is still very involved with the Iowa State Cyclones and gets to stay about as close to the game as you can get.
