The Greatest Multi-Sport Athletes

This week on the podcast, Tim sits down with the second-best athlete in the Flattery clan; Neil. With Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders getting lots of attention recently, it is time to reflect on today's sports world. Could we have another multi-sport professional athlete like Coach Prime or Bo? There are many great historical examples like Jim Thorpe and Jackie Robinson and others who competed in multiple sports in college or even in the Olympics. But in a world of specialization and year-round youth leagues, will we see those types of athletes disappear?

Playing multiple sports is really just part of growing up in small-town Iowa. Smaller schools rely on athletes to play different sports to field competitive teams. Being a 3-4 sport athlete in a 1A Iowa high school isn’t unusual. Certainly, as the schools and class sizes grow, making a varsity lineup in multiple sports becomes more competitive, and so you see more single sport athletes. As much as we love competing around here, playing sports is about more than being on varsity.

What are the tradeoffs between specialization and being a multi-sport athlete? Tim and Neil break it all down from the perspective of athletes, fans, and dads. And needless to say, their toddlers and infants are already in the multi-sport camp.
