Zach Bohannon
“The neglected middle child that no one loved”
The Bohannon name is synonymous with basketball. The four Bohannon brothers know how to put the biscuit in the basket. This week, we have the second oldest and perhaps the most multi-talented of the crew on the podcast this week. Zach Bohannon had a terrific basketball career for the Wisconsin Badgers and Linn Mar Lions before hanging up his sneakers and becoming a professional fan for his Hawkeye brother Jordan.
“I am the smartest, tallest, best looking, and best shooter”
Growing up with three brothers is one thing but when they are close in age and standout athletes, there are bound to be some wild stories. Even now as adults they still roll out the ball for shooting contests and a little trash talking. Now that Zach’s career is over though, he has taken to following Jordan and attending every single game where fans have been permitted. He is now on his third Camry and has driven tens of thousands of miles travelling the country to keep his promise to attend every game.
In his own right though, Zach was a very good basketball player. He was an all-state caliber player for the Linn Mar Lions and committed to the Air Force Academy. In his first year at the academy he came off of the bench for the Falcons and was named a starter for his second year before two injuries derailed his success. The injuries coupled with the deteriorating relationship with his coaches and made him realize it was time for a change. Bohannon wanted to move closer to home and play against a higher level of competition. He found that opportunity at Wisconsin, his brother Matt’s alma mater.
Once he landed in Wisconsin he found himself on one of the best teams in the country. He was on a very deep roster that included 4 players at his position who signed NBA deals, including Frank Kaminsky. Bohannon played in 31 games for the Badgers after sitting out his transfer year. Bohannon took advantage of his time in school, earning multiple degrees while playing in the NCAA tournament and earning a Final Four appearance.
”If what you did yesterday looks big, then you haven’t done much today”
This interview goes far beyond the court and basketball though. Bohannon has taken advantage of every opportunity he has earned. Tim and Zach dive into everything from Jordan’s career, NCAA policies, and life as a former player… including foreign policy and Bohannon’s top secret security clearance as an intelligence officer for the Iowa Air National Guard. Seriously, this interview has everything in it.

We love repeat-Moonlighters and this week we bring back an all-time great. Pat Hoberg isn’t just a top-tier Moonlighter though, he is also the number one umpire in Major League Baseball. The Urbandale native was the star of episode 103 when he was an up and comer in the Majors. He returns to the pod as arguably the best umpire in the world!
