The Greatest Football Players Ever from Iowa

“Born, Bred, and Corn Fed Football Talent.”

For being the home of the Field of Dreams, Iowa has had its fair share of stars shining bright under the Friday night lights. This week, Tim and Tom did their research and prepared an all time 2-deep lineup of Iowans who played in the NFL. This wasn’t your average fantasy draft! We scoured the internet looking for players who were born, bred, and corn-fed Iowans and then compared position groups looking to make the best lineup possible.

A few of the players on our list were gimmes. Names like Kurt Warner and Reggie Roby jump up to the top of any list about Iowans in the NFL. There were some positions, like the interior of the offensive line, where we had to make some tough decisions after a debate. And there were a few other positions that required a little extra research to even fill out the chart.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have a well known tradition of taking homegrown talent and turning them into NFL offensive lineman. Greats like Jay Hilgenberg and Marshall Yanda came off of the draft board right away and were 2 of the 9 Hawkeyes that we discussed for our offensive line.

Aplington Parkersburg was, of course, the top name for high schools producing NFL talent with Aaron Kampman, Casey Wiegmann, Brad Meester, and Jared Devries all being part of the discussion. But AP wasn’t the only school with multiple mentions as Iowa City High, Dowling, and others had a few of their favorite sons pop up.

As with any top list, there is room for debate. Tim and Tom had some back and forth, and some creative GM work to cover some thin spots, but ultimately came out with the Moonlight Graham All Time Iowa NFL Football team. We would love to hear who you think we missed, where we got our depth chart wrong, and what names you came up with for the defensive backfield.
