Jacy Holloway

With the modern game so focused on scoring, a pass-first point guard almost seems like a relic. This week Tim sits down with one of the all-time great point guards in Iowa State history who just happens to be one of Tim’s childhood heroes. Jacy Holloway was a Kansas boy who was recruited to Iowa State right at the time of the transition from Johnny Orr to Tim Floyd. Jacy’s game was to protect the ball and facilitate the offense but this episode also talks about facilitating the change to a new coach.

Jacy Holloway grew up in Kansas and ended up as a Cyclone recruiting target because he was at the top of the list for Hutchinson Community College, a JUCO basketball power. He didn’t know it would be Johnny Orr’s final season, but Holloway ended up being critical in the transition from Orr to Tim Floyd.

Cyclone fans will remember the transition from Johnny Orr’s style of up-tempo play and pushing the ball to Tim Floyd’s more intense culture and different style of play. Holloway was a cornerstone in his sophomore and junior years as Fred Hoiberg, Loren Meyer, and Julius Michalik finished their careers. Holloway played with those legends in the first years with Floyd at the helm and then helped bring guys like Kelvin Cato, Shawn Bankhead, and Stevie Johnson onboard.

Jacy Holloway was part of 83 wins in his four years in Cardinal and Gold with one of the biggest being the Cyclone’s win in the last Big 8 Championship game. But over the last 25 years since Holloway finished his career, the Cyclones have had some incredible highs and some pretty low moments. With this season off to a hot start, Holloway sees a pretty bright future in Ames.
