John Shuster - Gold Medalist & 5-time Olympian

This week’s guest is a fan and pod favorite; Olympic gold medalist John Shuster. John Shuster led the American curling team to an improbable gold medal in the 2018 Olympics. This year will be his 5th Olympic games. Shuster is arguably the greatest American curler of all time even though his trip to the top of the medal stand started out as a true underdog.

A native of Moonlight Graham’s own Chisolm, Minnesota, Shuster knows his way around the ice. And while he has had an incredible career, his 2018 gold medal win was one of the biggest surprises of those games because John and his team weren’t really even supposed to be there. After going without a medal in the 2014 games, the U.S. Curling Association didn’t even invite Shuster’s team to an athlete combine designed to assemble America’s best chance to medal in 2018. Shuster’s team of ‘misfits’ went on to win the trials even though they were not part of the high-performance program that year.

The American curling crew, with Shuster as their leader, got off to a slow start in South Korea. The 2018 gold was the result of getting hot at the right time. Shuster returns to the pod as he prepares to lead USA Curling into the upcoming Olympics in China. In this interview, Tim and John reflect on life since the 2018 games and preparing for his trip to China. 

And even though you can’t call the reigning gold medalist an underdog, you can certainly call him a Moonlighter.
