Randy Rahe

Of course I play baseball, I’m from Bancroft, Iowa

Our Moonlighter this week went from a small town to the Big Sky. Randy Rahe is a four-time Big Sky Conference coach of the year at Weber State University. He has 5 conference titles and has won 63% of his games. While he is one of the top mid-major coaches in the country right now, he graduated from tiny, and now closed, Bancroft St. John’s. Rahe was a two-sport star for the Johnnies and went on to play both baseball and basketball at Buena Vista. When his playing days were done he traded his jump shot for a clipboard and fast breaks for walking the sideline.

Randy Rahe grew up in a diehard baseball town. Bancroft St. John’s didn’t have many sports or other activities, so he grew up playing baseball in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. After practice for his team, the high school players would coach the youth baseball players or go to a park and keep playing ball. That old-school approach and the way that he was coached show up in the way he works with his own athletes. He pushes his players hard but he does it from a place of caring about his players.

Coach, are you going to let me wear a headband?

That approach has brought him a lot of success at Weber State. Most notably, Rahe coached Damian Lillard for 4 years. Rahe tells the story of recruiting Lillard and being very clear about the expectations at Weber State and being sent home if he doesn’t meet those expectations. The old-school approach has helped him win 63% of his games and having Dame as an alum has brought even more attention to his program. Weber State has produced several professional basketball players, but Rahe takes a lot of pride in the culture and family within his program and the types of men that his players become.
