Sam Meuret is on the brink of the US Open

The movie Tin Cup is a near-perfect Moonlight story. Even non-golfers can relate to the washed-up underdog going for it one more time. Heck, we’ve all played a round of golf that left us wondering how much money we lost in balls alone until we hit that one shot that makes us think maybe we do have ‘it’ after all. This week's Moonlighter is far from washed up, but just like Tin Cup he is chasing a dream of playing the U.S. Open. With Tim Flattery alongside as his Cheech Marin, Sam Meuret returns to the Moonlight Graham Show on his path to the final qualifier for the U.S. Open.

Sam Meuret returns to the podcast with Tim once again toting the bag as his caddy for a qualifying tournament. Meuret was one of thousands trying to make it through the first-round qualifier at one of over 100 locations around the US, Canada, and Japan. After playing 36 holes near Omaha for the last episode, Tim and Sam headed East to play in the Cedar Falls area this time. Perhaps the first qualifier was all the caddying experience that Tim needed to really do his job because Meuret is one of 500 that will play in the final qualifying round.

The U.S. Open has an interesting tournament format in which really any golfer with a registered handicap under 1.5 can attempt to qualify. This means that in the final qualifying round Meuret and other amateurs will be going up against the likes of Phil Mickelson and Ricky Fowler who also have to earn a spot in the field.

While it is rare for someone in Sam Meuret’s position to go all the way to a U.S. Open title, it has happened twice before. And if we know anything about Moonlight Graham stories, it is to expect the unexpected.
